Project

The Risk Bridge

Project Overview

Nexpave completed the profiling of the existing roadway to match into the newly constructed bridge approaches, the team then transported over 300 tonnes of asphalt from Austek Yatala to the site and laid 50mm layer of AC14H asphalt as the new wearing surface, rejoining the bot side of the bridge. The team completed the work within the designated construction program to allow final delivery prior to the holiday period.

FAQs

What is the difference between asphalt and bitumen?

Bitumen is the black sticky product derived from crude oil; Bitumen is the binding agent that waterproofs the road surface. While asphalt includes between 4 to 8 percent of bitumen the asphalt mixes are similar to a cake mixture including bitumen, sand, metal dust, lime.

How long does a new asphalt surface actually last?

With professional installation and regular care, quality asphalt typically lasts 20 to 30+ years. In contrast, a standard bitumen spray seal usually has a lifespan of about 10 to 15 years.

What is needed to maintain asphalt and spray sealed surfaces?

There are many maintenance items that can be completed regularly to extend the life of the surface.

  1. Trim and spray grass and weeds to prevent them growing into the edges of the surface – if grass grows through a road surface or edges it allows water to follow.
  2. Apply a hand full of sand to high turning areas to protect the surface this stops tyres from gripping then surface on hot days.
  3. Don’t drive in the same path all the time, if you use the whole surface it will last longer.
My pavement has cracks or potholes — should I be worried?

Cracks are the primary entry point for water, which destroys road foundations. Professional bitumen crack sealing is a fast, cost-effective way to stop water infiltration and can extend your pavement's life by up to 30%.
